The day has finally arrived: Remonstered! The Monsters Know What They’re Doing is available in bookstores and game stores across North America, continental Europe and Australia. (My agent is shopping around for a U.K. publisher, and I hope to have good news about that in the near future.
December 2023. That’s when I first informed my editor that the release of a new Monster Manual was going to necessitate a revised and expanded edition of The Monsters Know What They're Doing: Combat Tactics for Dungeon Masters. February 2025. That’s when the new Monster Manual
Over the weekend, I received a copy of the new Cypher Character Rulebook as a backer reward. I’d already received the book in PDF a while back and given it a once-over, but with the hardcover in hand, I decided to give it a more thorough examination. Before
The last couple of months have been simultaneously crazy busy yet also strangely devoid of news or thoughts worth sharing. Which isn’t really surprising, when you think about it, because if you don’t have time to read cool stuff, play cool stuff, think about cool stuff, etc., you
As you read this, pretend you’re watching a video of me walking and talking in a scenic outdoor location somewhere. Maybe a forest preserve. It’s not that I couldn’t make a video like that, but I’ve done enough video and audio production before to know how
We’re at T minus 6 months (yes, I’m watching the NASA Artemis feed right now), and it’s my pleasure to share with you the cover of my upcoming book, which—after some last-minute wrangling with the Gallery Books publishing office—will be titled Remonstered! The Monsters
The Dungeon Masters’ Guild turned 10 years old this past month, and Teos Abadía and Shawn Merwin presented a retrospective in a couple of videos they released in December (1, 2). There’s really no denying at this point that the DMs’ Guild is in decline, possibly irreversibly, thanks to

Hello again, readers. I hope you all had a happy and restful holiday season and are holding up under whatever fresh hell this new year has already been. I’ve been quiet these last couple of months partly because most of my time has been taken up by a side
Sending out a quick note to let you know about an upcoming charity stream: This coming Saturday, Nov. 15, I’m hosting a Dungeons & Dragons game featuring Brian Gray (Rivals of Waterdeep), Jen Kretchmer (Players and Book, Children of Éarte, Heroes of the Planes), Lexi McQueen (Sacred Machinations, When
You may find it hard to believe, but there’s no convention dedicated to tabletop roleplaying gaming, or even tabletop gaming in general, in Chicago. There’s C2E2, but as you can guess from its full name—the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo—it treats TTRPGs as an afterthought. There
My latest title, Making Enemies: Monster Design Inspiration for Tabletop Roleplaying Games, is just 29 days away from publication! It’s been a long road and a long wait, but Making Enemies finally rolled off the presses last week, and on Friday I got to hold a copy in my
In another century, I studied photography. My advanced photography and senior seminar classes were taught by Professor Sean Wilkinson, now retired. As someone who stumbled sideways into visual art, I initially didn’t have much of a cognitive framework or vocabulary for thinking about it and discussing it, and my
One of the most enlightening things I’ve read on the topic of tabletop roleplaying games is an essay by Wolfgang Baur in The Kobold Guide to Worldbuilding, “How Real Is Your World? History and Fantasy as a Spectrum of Design Options.” It was this essay that clarified for me
Now that I’m done with my (cough) “speedrun” revising The Monsters Know What They’re Doing for 2025, I’m undertaking the long-overdue task of straightening up my desk, which includes dealing with an outrageous number of unfiled papers. Some of these papers, though, are too good not
I ended up going radio silent for longer than I intended to, but I think my reason is a pretty good one: I’ve just finished my first draft of a revision of The Monsters Know What They’re Doing for the 2025 Monster Manual. I began what I initially
Last week, organizers announced on social media that Big Bad Con (an annual game convention held in Burlingame, Calif., in the fall) and Big Bad Online (a TTRPG-related panel discussion series streamed on Twitch in the spring) would not be held in 2025. They left unanswered the question of
(Read part 1 here.) In the early 1980s, a college-age programmer named Richard Garriott—who’d written and sold his first computer game, Akalabeth, as a teenager—had established a successful series of roleplaying games for the Apple II computer, but as he looked back on Ultima I: The
This “death curse” you speak of … you say it prevents people from being brought back from the dead. Who gets brought back from the dead? People with connections. Influence. Money. If a man is loved by his neighbors, respected in his community, but poor, and he has an accident, does
(Read part 1 here. Read part 2 here.) So the Hero System was a bust. What about some of the other genreless roleplaying game systems that social media readers suggested to me? Genesys is a universalization of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game published by Fantasy Flight Games in 2012 (not
